Samsung, as many HD TV enthusiasts know, is one of the premier LED and LCD TV manufacturers. Aggressive niche brand positioning has given Samsung an edge as one of the industry's quality and high performance leaders. Samsung's upcoming strategy to blitz the 3D LED and LCD TV market may, however, be a bit ambitious for even an industry leader.
Samsung began its plans to manufacture mass quantities of 3D LED and LCD screens this week.
The idea of Samsung getting involved in 3D LCD and LED screens is certainly no surprise. After all, Samsung is the largest flat screen manufacturer in the world. The move though, to start mass producing the 3D screens in high volumes, before they have been tested in the home, is a surprise.
The aggressive move to hoard the 3D market prematurely begs one very important question: is 3D the wave of the future for home entertainment or just a temporary craze better enjoyed in theaters?
3D movies and the Imax 3D have certainly captured a fair amount of attention as of late because of the blockbuster success of movies like Avatar and Up. Together, they have grossed over $850 million in 3D showings alone.
The success of these movies can certainly be attributed to the overall experience of the theater or Imax. The action comes to life on a screen that forms itself around the entire audience and has life-like sound coming from every direction.
The same experience simply cannot be recreated at home, even with a 52" LCD TV and full entertainment center.
Not to mention, with the amount of media currently available in 3D, the options are certainly not abundant. At the current pace, a new studio 3D movie comes out about once a quarter. TV is not much better with only a few channels announced to air thus far.
In many ways, buying a complete 3D entertainment system is like buying the arcade version of Pacman. Sure, it's fun in the arcade for the few minutes that the game is going on, but the second you bring the arcade game home for a few thousand dollars, it loses its appeal. Why? Because its limited.
There are only so many levels available. Plus, it loses its enjoyment if there is no one around to enjoy it with.
The same can be said about 3D LCD and LED TVs. The experience is limited in the home. 3D is better off enjoyed at the Imax where the sights and sounds capture your senses from every angle.
Samsung is taking a gigantic uncalculated risk by manufacturing bulk am ounts of 3D LCD and LED screens. Without knowing the adoption rate of the 3D TV in the home, Samsung can only go on the speculation of a couple box office hits.
If not well received, the mass produced inventory of the expensive ($3,000-$4,000) 3D LED TVs could leave Samsung a bit financially shaken.
Why Tainted Green? Literally, green is only a color. But in typical human fashion we've pumped a cacophony of additional meanings and symbolism into the word. Green has become a marketing tool used by companies with impunity to wrap their products in a balmy haze of "ethical" and "conscientious" approval.
That's where Tainted Green steps in. We are seekers of truth, and we support the fundamental drivers behind the green movement. Ideas like permaculture, renewable energy, and recycling make sense, but companies that express support for green without a wholesome process behind it have tainted the meaning of green. And so, our focus is to create green content that pushes the ideology forward while pointing out which parts look like this year's marketing baggage. Welcome to Tainted Green, where we focus on unearthing the truth about green.

3d tv are a fad and will never be popular not only do they have limited sources but most american enjoy watching tv without any glasses on which are very distracting and out of fashion

Face it 3D tv's at home is going to be really cool!! But I doubt that the first versions will be that great. Besides it's not like you have to wear the 3D glasses all the time..
where I can get one?
In a matter of time, Samsung will have the 3D model fully produced and on shelves so that it can take advantage of the huge 3D market share that it could enjoy because of its early investment. Keep checking back for updates.
The first poster is correct I think, 3D is a great marketing gimmick that has revived the cinema but the real reason why people paid to go and see a 3D movie is because they have no way of getting it at home, however I doubt people will be willing to pay to watch a movie in 3D at home unless the price is reasonable.
World Cup football is due in 4 weeks time. Just imagine watching the matches in 3D. I'll have to sit well away from the set or I might try to kick the ball or head it in the net. Awsome quality!! Bravo Samsung - now work on the PRICE!!!
Once you see sports in 3d you will love it. It is too amazing to describe.
i just bought a 3d samsung tv.i love it but can't find 3d movies.WHEN WILL THEY BE AVAILABLE?
Went to go see a demo of 3d lcd. Brilliant.
What I found really amazing was the salesman's claim that apparently ANY Blue Ray move can be played in 3D by the 3D BD Player. I checked one out, a normal 'old' Blue Ray disk, and it works.
I don't think content is much of an issue, but I do believe that games will inevitably be the biggest market. Due to games alone, 3D is here ti stay. Pity about the glasses though.
I have to agree that gaming is the biggest market for 3D.But do not underestimate progress....Next year the 3D shutter glasses will not be necessary anymore and with all new technology ,prices are the highest in the beginning.I guess they will work on bringing out more content because the world cup soccer is only 3 weeks and the dutch reelections (also in 3D) are almost over too.........
Talking about glasses, thank God! at least now we have some colorful ones to choose from. We all love to watch and play 3D movies and games but those dim, ugly glasses are an obligation. I do not remember the name of the brand, maybe Nintendo not sure, but there are some gaming gadgets which do not require the users to use glasses while playing 3D games. 3D LCD LED TVs has been revolutionary for the gaming industry. With the 3D era just starting Hollywood surely should think of more innovative ways.
People love 3D, children love 3D and of course I absolutely love it too. Ever tested with Samsung 55″ series 8 and I have to say that it’s totally awesome. But big problems I’ve seen for now are high price of the 3D sets and like you said we must have 3D glasses and might be paid so much if there are many members in your family.
