That’s a hairdo: salons & pet groomers help fight BP oil spill

That’s a hairdo: salons & pet groomers help fight BP oil spill As news of the BP Oil spill spread, many Americans were looking for a way to voice their opinions or lend a hand. Some called for a boycott of BP stations, increased regulation for offshore oil drilling, and others shaved their heads. No, really. An eco-minded non-profit called Matter Of Trust is collecting human hair and animal fur to protect the threatened beaches of the Gulf Coast.

Matter Of Trust’s mission is to “Link ideas, spark action and materialize sustainable systems,” as shown through their unique hair recycling program. Donated hair or animal fur is either made into a mat or booms that one Alabama resident called “a giant hair sausage,” but are actually just hair and fur stuffed pantyhose.

The booms and mats are useful in a situations like that of the Gulf Coast states to prevent oil from hitting beaches. Hair isn’t absorbent like a sponge, it is adsorbent which means it clings to the oil. The mats and booms aren’t as powerful as similar chemical based versions but they can be cleaned and reused several times.

The organization had been working with the idea since 1998 and were flooded with inquiries after the BP oil spill. Salons shipped hair clippings to them in old shampoo boxes, started 24-hour cut-a-thons, and the charity-minded transvestites from San Francisco's Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence donated their extra large hosiery.

The non-profit is also getting a lot of help from America’s four legged friends. Petco and their 1,000 grooming salons expect to ship five tons of hair to Matter Of Trust by the end of this weekend.

It may sound silly to hit the post office with a box of hair from your Lhasa Apso’s visit to the groomer, but the numbers really do add up. Matter Of Trust estimates that 300,000 pounds of human and animal hair are cut daily in the United States. As the spill advances we’re going to need all the help we can get, even if it comes from your canine.

This is a  great thing --What else are Solon's supposed to do with their "Garbage Hair"

Giving it to a company like Matter of Trust is a No-Brainer! I heard/read they are also known for their Hair Mat's that they will be using shortly on these spills --- Hair Carpet? Hell, that's brilliant ! I wish I thought of it -- How do I buy stock in this company, can you imagine a world with homes everywhere along the coast line with their own S.O.S Clean-Up-Kit  containing hair Mats and Booms they stored incase of such a thing?

Thank you for posting this -- it really makes me feel like I can make a difference by donating an buildiing my own booms -- Where's my dog?

I've donated my hair before to wigs for people suffering cancer. This is a great reason for me to do it again. The oil spill is a threat to both wild life and domestic animals. Everyone suffers... I hope at least pet owners will be able to keep their pets off the beaches or at least keep the pets healthy.

What a fantastic way for those in the hairdressing and pet care industries to show their support and help in a way that has real effect- Round of applause for all involved!

Very interesting article and yes it'll feel and look silly to parcel a box of hair but if it only helps I'm sure people all over the world will be glad to parcel their boxes of hairs. Oil spill is really a big threat to the sea creatures and to us. If hairs can make conditions better the word should spread all over the country, unitedly we have to do something for the oil spill.

Our organization's core mission is to develop all natural products for dogs.  Our staff is highly motivated by the opportunity to formulate products from the ground up utilizing the advancements in modern biochemistry. However when the VitaHound research staff initiated their study of the best natural substances for canine oral care we found the PetzLife formulation to be unbeatable.  Over the past year we have sold thousands of bottles of PetzLife to all types of dog owners.  Our product evaluation process takes advantage of these sales via feedback from follow up emails.   The emails request feedback on both the product received from us and other products in the same category that the customer may have experience with, including Plaque Attack.   In addition to constant feedback from customers we continually test and compare products to assure we are currently identifying the best product in any one category.  Finally the info from posts on forums where dog lovers share their real life experience with various products help us compare and contrast our data to the wide sample provided by quality dog forums.  The combination of sources has proved invaluable to understanding the modern dog owner.  I look forward to the comments from the dog groomers community.
