HP Slate critical of Apple iPad's inadequacies

HP Slate critical of Apple iPad's inadequacies Since the moment rumors started circulating about the iPad, tech geeks (Apple lovers and haters alike) around the world were asking one very defining question: what type of operating system would it use? To many, the operating system would define the device. When the iPad was released with the iPhone OS 3.2 operating system, many disappointed consumers started to call it a glorified iPhone, which, if you are looking at it's capabilities, is exactly what it is.

Obviously, the type of operating system did not dissuade the hundreds of thousands (500,000 after the first week) of early consumers that already purchased the iPad. The flashy apps, sleek design, dynamic video and music options, and newly developed e-reader capabilities were enough for the $499 investment.

Apple, wisely never positioned it as a laptop replacement. Instead, Steve Jobs explained it as the product that fits between the smartphone and the laptop that can perform the hybrid functions like browsing, email, photo, video, music, games, and e-books.

But many weren't buying Steve Jobs' new category of devices. For those people, HP is in the works of creating the HP Slate.

It is difficult to compare the HP Slate and the Apple iPad because HP is looking to capitalize on just about everything Apple did wrong with the iPad.

Apple uses a limiting operating system that is great for apps and not for computing so HP developed the device with a fully functioning Windows operating system.

Apple lacks the USB and SD ports so HP added the ports to the HP slate.

Apple couldn't get Adobe Flash to work with the iPad so HP insured that Adobe would be fully functional with the HP Slate.

Apple released the iPad before it could insert a camera so HP added a camera that can record stills and video and that can be used for video conferencing.

In other words, the products have polarized from one another because iPad critics want everything the iPad is not, almost creating another category of devices.

As a late bloomer, HP is doing everything right. Position the Slate where Apple has not been able to satisfy customers, and where Apple will most likely never be able to satisfy customers, unless it makes a huge change to its tablet operating system.

The success of the HP Slate will hinge on whether it can play up the inadequacies of the iPad and turn iPad critics into HP Slate buyers.

Wow, are you an HP employee?

the ipad is one of the single greatest apple products in all history. it is great the way it is. although it could use a camera and os 4

Anyone who buys an iPad G1 is an idiot. You know that every important feature the iPad is missing will be drip fed in each new revision.

The iPad is one of the worst and most overhyped devices I've ever seen. It is the Segway of computers because it is extremely overpriced and accomplishes very little. People have no need for one and yet they buy it because of media marketing hype. The iPad runs a cell phone OS on a computer-sized device. It runs an extremely limited mobile web browser instead of one of the dozens of available web browsers that can display the full internet.

The HP Slate on the otherhand does just about everything right, it is exactly the type of device I wanted Apple to make. The Slate is not a big iPod Touch, it's an actual computer with touch screen controls and an accelerometer. With the Slate you are not locked into a limited and closed app store run by maniacal and controling hardware manufacturer, you can install whatever software you choose. In the case of Windows that represents millions of programs and websites you can access that are not available on the iPad.

Please don't try to justify the quality of the iPad based on sales either, cause Crocs are some of the worst shoes ever created and they sold millions too. People buy stupid crap in America, this is what's known as a fad or an iFad.

Wow. The Slate sounds fantastic....where can I get my hands on one?? Oh, right.........

Too many HP employers on this thread

Try to be a bit objective please ... you need to at least have used the iPad and the HP slate to make a comment on either one

For some people the iPad is a very handy and fast internet device, for those looking for a notebook featured tabletm they will be disappointed

I'm no HP employee but just reading about the arguments from both sides and the specs are clear enough to conclude that the HP Slate truly is better than the iPad.

Apple has announced that it will not support Flash!  That's suicide.  HP Slate's ability to run Flash through it's web browser will provide the Full internet experience instead of the crippled internet experience iPad owners are willing to settle with.

If I want to print my documents, photos, and presentations slides from an iPad, is it possible?  I can see that you can't do that.  On the otherhand, HP makes the most popular printers in the industry so HP Slate will without question accommodate this - very useful.

How much space does the iPad accommodate?  Does it include an SD memory card for extended memory?  The specs say no.  However, the HP Slate supports SD card..and if that ain't enough, HP Slate also supports a USB port which means I can connect the latest 1 Terrabyte USB drives?  That's awesome!

Can I install Yahoo Messenger and have video conferencing with my friends on an iPad?  I see the specs don't include a camera.  Again, the HP Slate will allow you to run all of the existing Windows compatible applications and includes a rear AND front facing camera for videoconferencing! Very cool indeed!

I think I'm touching on just the surface of what you can do with an HP Slate.  With that said, how can anybody deny that the HP Slate is far more functional and practical compared to the iPad?

The HP Slate is going to be very very popular, for both the average user and business users.

The iPad is a single apple while the HP Slate is the whole apple pie in my opinion.  In my blog I point out six deficiencies which mean that the iPad will never replace the PC until it has multitasking, flash support, an SD memory slot, a megapixel camera, and freedom from the frifggin' Apple store and iTunes.

Apple reminds me a lot of AOL in the 90's...arrogant and on the way down.  People don't want Apple apps, they want ALL the apps the internet has to offer.  Sorry, but that's really only available in the Linux, Android, and Windows OS world at the present time.

Apple looks and speaks "proprietary & closed" while Microsoft, Adobe & even Google seem a lot more liberal lately with their OS and apps.  i think they figured-out they will make plenty on the back end add-ons rather than trying to pinch you right from the start with the company line and the company offerings...or else.

I think the specs are great. I think they offer a bunch of opportunities that the IPad doesn't; however, I don't want a tablet to replace my laptop. Just doesn't make sense. I feel that the differentiator's that the HP Slate brings will adversely affect it's performance in the market. The entire focus surrounding these tablet's is mobility. What good is a mobile device going to provide me if I'm tethered to a wall every 3-4 hours which is optimistic given that the majority of Win 7 netbooks barely make 3 hours.

As to the proprietary & closed remark they are no more so than Microsoft, Adobe, and Google. They just happen to be most vocal about their commitment to user experience. I couldn't expect to develop an objective-c based entity and run it in flash or windows? Both of those vendors would push me to Action Script and .Net respectively. It is how they make their money and further their ability to sell goods. And to the closed remark something to keep in mind is that this applies to apps that run through their store only. If I am developing for the enterprise and want to use a framework like MonoTouch Apple can't stop me because they have no view that the app is being written. With the wireless enterprise distribution coming in 4 it will only be a matter of time before enterprises can take advantage of wireless app distribution which means they won't have a reliance on app distribution through the "Control (App) Store"

All of this said I am holding out to see what Notion Ink's Adam brings or the Dell Streak. I think that HP is focusing too much on the netbook aspect and not enough on the mobility aspect. That is great that they have all those powerful features with a smaller battery on a mobile device. (Doesn't that last sentence sound contradict itself??)
