Jamie Oliver’s “Food Revolution” equals better test scores

Jamie Oliver’s “Food Revolution” equals better test scores Jamie Oliver’s “Food Revolution” is happening right now in the city of Huntington in West Virginia, but it really started back in the schools of Greenwich in London, England. A new study found that offering healthier school lunch choices had an added benefit of raising the test scores of students in Greenwich.

Before 2004, Greenwich schools fed students pre-packaged and processed food to their kids much like Huntington. Burgers, fries, fish sticks, turkey bites, and common British fare like sausage rolls were often on the menu. After Oliver’s campaign for fresh food, the schools adopted a menu to match his plan. They served lighter and healthier items like vegetarian chow mein, salads, chicken and mushroom casserole, and Mexican bean wraps.

The study was led by Oxford and Essex Universities and looked at the eighty schools in Greenwich to see if Oliver’s menu had any extra benefits such as increased academic performance. Nearby schools that didn’t have similar menus were used as a control group.

Researchers targeted eleven year old kids between 2002 and 2007 that were taking their age mandated SATs, an educational assessment test based on stages of development. They skipped the school year of 2004-2005 when Oliver’s new program started in Greenwich.

Eleven year old pupils are supposed to be at a benchmark commonly known as level four. According to the study, Greenwich students that made the mark in English rose 4.5%. They even saw an increase in students outperforming their peers by a 6% jump in children reaching level 5 in science. “Authorized absences” or days that students were out sick was cut by 15%. Oliver noted, “we could see the benefits to children's health and teachers. We could see that asthmatic kids weren't having to use the school inhalers so often, for example.”

These aren’t huge numbers by any means but they are still improvements over a two year period. The study noted that these are positive signs because, “One could have expected that changing diet habits is a long and difficult process, which would possibly only have effects after a long time.”

It’s not surprising that children are performing better academically by eating a proper meal like vegetarian chow mein instead of packaged fish sticks loaded with additives and sodium. Maybe adults in the workplace should get onboard with Oliver’s “Food Revolution” and take a look at their very own lunch habits.

Mi fa tanto piacere che al fine c'e' una persona che son sicuro potra' cambiare la forma di mangiare in USA.

Spero che cosi' si arrivera' ad avere un popolo piu' sano e meno obesso.

Buona fortuna

I watched all of last weeks programs and tonight watching the positive influence on the high school kids. From past experience, I've been told from children of all ages; "We miss our parents really parenting, preparing foods together and eating good foods together. With both parents working, we miss alot of quality time, like what we see on the movies."

I think what you are doing Jamie is "Excellent- 10 Stars rating" because these kids are all our futures! Would love to see a big "cook off" parents included on the high school football field to celebrate your excellent work, a toast and wonderful opportunity for celebrating what you are doing. It'd be great to see the elementary kids and their parents there too! (Hey, it's just an idea!)  That is how much I think about what you are doing!

You're great Jamie. Thank you for coming to our country and caring about what is happening with your Food Revolution

Thank God, you've got the courage to try to change anything in West Virginia.  We

are so appreciative of your efforts. The people of our state are brainwashed into thinking

that any change is an attack on their worlds.  The Governor has made a fortune in the

coal industry and makes sure no new industries that would compete with coal are permitted

in the state. Education, including eating healthy food is taboo.  Our state is used as a

body pool for miners and soldiers. The state is in the condition it is by design.  If no one

is educated or healthy, they can't stand up for themselves and make changes that will

threaten the "powers that rule".

It is apparent that you are on the receiving end of the hate that is bred into the people by

the media (ie. radio, newspaper, and TV, which are owned and controlled by the coal industry).

Also, the hateful treatment you have received by the kitchen "boss" &  Rhonda -  sent down

by the leadership in Charleston is absolutely embarassing and shameful.

God bless you and the kids from the high school who had the courage to stand up and help

you.  You are our hero; everyone in West Virginia is not hateful, in fact, when they're not

afraid of repercussions, they are wonderful, kind and loving.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Please do not give up on us! We love you.

Sincerely,

Diane Garvin

Go Jaime!

Go Jaime! I'm a retired NY and Fl teacher. You are right on! I admire and respect your backbone to take on these food challenges not only in your own country but here in the USA as well! How I wish someone would also have your backbone to stand up to the 545 in D.C. They need  to truly represent the people, all of the people, by working together for the good of all. They need to have the same benefits, etc., as everyone else. Good luck and thank you for trying to help us all appreciate and enjoy good food and health!

I have watched the first 2 shows sitting here in Ontario Canada and after last week, I was a little skeptical - the elementary school cook (Alice) needs a good swift kick, the radio talk show host is an idiot and I feel sorry for the school administrator having to adhere to what are obviously absurd and antiquated regs.  However, after tonights show, and the success of the kids with their dinner for 80 I'm hoping that this positive attitude continues.  Obesity is a problem not limited to West Virginia - I am amazed at what I see walking the streets of our city and positively stunned with the stats re: the massive strain currently being put on our health system, which strain will only continue to escalate.   Bravo Jamie! This world needs many more like you.

I think that Rhonda McCoy should stop being such a negative nellie with all the quidelines via the government.  If the quidelines lines were suppose to be healthful, why do the kids always throw out the healthy foods and just eat the crap.  Give Jaime a chance, he certaianly can't do any worse then we have now!!!!

I love the show.  I appreciate Jamie's dedication and optimistic attitude.  He is right on.  I find it disaponting that someone from outside the United States has to take the time and energy to help us see the light.  His committment to this effort is to be commended.  He gave up time with his family so that many could understand the impact that this will have on the lives of those he touches.  Quality of life will be the end result.  Obesity is a killer, someone needs to stand up and make us listen so that we get it.

I look forward to how the show will end.  You never know maybe Alice will come around!  There is always hope and thats what this show provides.

If Jamie is here to help us it only means people from other countries like the Americans and we in return should also appreciate that. Americans thrive on fast food and are workaholics and do not take out quality time nor are serious about health so we must feel fortunate that people like Jamie wants to show us the right way.
